For many people, putting off a dental consultation isn’t really about the teeth. It’s about not knowing what you’re walking into—or worse, knowing exactly what you’re walking into because you’ve been there before. A rushed exam. A generic treatment plan that’s suggested before you’ve even finished sitting down, and a bill that makes the whole experience feel transactional or like a money-grab.
Those experiences are a big part of why so many patients come to River Oaks Dental Arts having not seen a dentist in years. If that’s you, this post is for you. What happens here is genuinely different. Sure, other dental offices may make a similar claim, but when we say it, it’s not solely a marketing claim. It’s a structural reality of how our practice operates.
We want every one of our patients to know exactly what to expect before you walk in, because ‘no surprises’ is part of the point. Our team views each consultation as the beginning of a relationship; one built on time, full transparency, and the belief that patients make better decisions when they actually understand what’s happening in their own mouth, all of their treatment options, and the financial implications.
Our "Show and Tell" Philosophy: Why We Spend Extra Time
Everything about a River Oaks Dental Arts consultation flows from one decision: to spend more time with each patient than most dental practices do. That might sound like a small thing, but it shapes everything that follows.
It’s also one of the major reasons our practice operates out-of-network with insurance. Insurance reimbursement models are built around efficiency and volume—the kind of care that moves quickly, sees the next patient, and bills accordingly. The comprehensive, unhurried approach we are committed to at River Oaks Dental Arts doesn’t fit that structure. Staying out-of-network is a deliberate choice that protects the quality of every visit and the experience for every patient.
What does that extra time go toward? Building a full picture of your oral and overall health from the very beginning, explaining findings clearly and in plain language, answering questions before you’ve even had to ask them, and making sure you leave understanding your own mouth better than when you arrived. The ultimate goal is a patient who feels empowered to make decisions, and never pressured into them.
What Is a Dental Consultation at River Oaks Dental Arts?
A River Oaks Dental Arts consultation is a comprehensive new patient exam and, depending on what we find and what you’re hoping to address, it can sometimes require two visits rather than one.
We typically schedule our new patient exam and professional cleaning separately, not because we are trying to add appointments to your calendar, but because the thoroughness of our consultation alone warrants its own dedicated time. We never want any part of your visit to feel rushed. That said, our team is happy to discuss accommodating both sessions into one visit if your schedule calls for it.
Here’s what our consultation process looks like:
New Patient Exams
When you arrive, you’ll be greeted warmly by our front desk team. The clinical process begins before you ever sit in the exam chair. We start by taking photograph(s) and a full-mouth scan(s) because this is the foundation of how Dr. Testa and Dr. Joy communicate their findings. This is how the “show and tell” philosophy that defines this practice comes into play: we make sure you can see what the team sees, not just hear about it.
Your health history is more than just a one-and-done form. Our doctors ask detailed questions about your lifestyle, diet, sleep, stress, and occupational factors—not as small talk, but because oral health and overall health are connected in ways that genuinely affect how findings are interpreted and what options make sense for your life, specifically.
The clinical examination is what sets a River Oaks Dental Arts visit apart from a standard dental appointment. It includes:
Intraoral and extraoral exam
Full head and neck evaluation
Jaw and joint exam (TMJ)
Functional bite exam
Soft tissue and oral cancer screening
Periodontal health assessment
Screening for sleep apnea, acid reflux, and bruxism (clenching/grinding)
Hard tissue exam: decay, infection, fractures, bone loss, recession, and malocclusion
Skin screening
Education happens throughout the entire process. Our doctors will walk through what they’re seeing in real time, referring to photos, video, and 3D scans so you can see it for yourself, too. Nobody looks at their own teeth the way a dentist does, and the technology we use helps bridge that gap in a way a verbal summary alone simply can’t. You’ll also leave with a printed report of everything discussed, including annotated findings, options, and recommendations to take home and review on your own time.
The Treatment Consultation
Whether it happens the same day or at a follow-up visit, there is no extra cost when booking the Treatment Consultation. This is where we review findings, clearly explain the “why” behind each recommendation, and present multiple treatment plan options. From there, you’re connected to our finance team, who will walk through insurance documentation, self-pay options, and financing so the financial conversation feels supportive and you’re never left to navigate it alone.
We’re Looking At Your Whole Health, Not Just Your Teeth
Dr. Testa and Dr. Joy have a line they mean genuinely: “On a good day, we save a tooth. On a great day, we save a life.”
That’s not hyperbole. A comprehensive oral exam can surface early indicators of conditions that have nothing to do with a cavity—sleep apnea, acid reflux, cardiovascular risk factors, oral cancer—often before a patient has any symptoms or awareness that something is developing. Our mouths are one of the most informative windows into overall health, and an exam at River Oaks Dental Arts is designed to look through it fully.
The lifestyle questions asked during the health history serve this same purpose. What you eat, how you sleep, how much stress you’re carrying, and what your workday looks like aren’t incidental details. They shape how we interpret findings and what treatment options are realistic for your life.
One thing patients consistently mention: they’re surprised by how much our doctors can infer about their habits and health from just an oral exam. Things like a grinding pattern in the enamel or tissue changes that suggest reflux. They can even spot signs of interrupted sleep in the jaw. Our patients often describe it as being genuinely seen, not just examined.
That’s the standard we hold ourselves to at every visit.
You’re Part of the Conversation When Treatment Plans Get Determined
The fear many patients carry with them into a new dental consultation is some version of the same thing: I’m going to be handed a treatment plan I don’t understand and pressured to sign it, and it’s going to cost me an arm and a leg.
That’s not how it works here.
Our approach to treatment planning is conservative by philosophy and collaborative by design. Age, cost, time, and your own goals are explicit criteria rather than afterthoughts. Our doctors will present both an “ideal plan” and a “realistic one” because they understand that what’s clinically optimal in a vacuum isn’t always what fits a patient’s life, budget, or timeline. Listening comes before offering any recommendations. Every time.
We always present multiple options. You choose the path forward, armed with a printed report in hand: a clear explanation of why each recommendation is being made, and no obligation to decide anything in the room. The handoff to the finance team follows the same process: insurance documentation, self-pay options, and financing are all available, and our team helps you navigate them.
You leave informed. That’s the goal—every time, for every patient.
Questions We Hear Before Every Consultation
Do you take insurance? Do dentists do free consultations?
River Oaks Dental Arts is out of network with insurance. Most insurance reimbursement models are centered around shorter, higher-volume visits. Staying in-network would mean adjusting the pace and depth of care we offer to fit that model, and we’re not willing to make that trade-off.
What our practice does provide is documentation you can submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. Our Financial team can help with that process, so you’re not left to figure it out on your own. As for free consultations, a comprehensive new patient exam at River Oaks Dental Arts does have a cost, but that cost comes with a level of thoroughness most patients tell us they’ve never experienced anywhere else.
What will my dental consultation cost?
The consultation itself has a clear, upfront cost. Treatment consultation costs can vary depending on what the exam reveals and which treatment options are recommended. We’d prefer to be candid about that fact rather than give you an arbitrary number that doesn’t mean anything.
We’ll present treatment options with pricing so you can make informed decisions without any ambiguity. Financing options are also available, and full details are on our Patient Resources page.
How long will the dental consultation take?
A comprehensive new patient exam at River Oaks Dental Arts is designed to be thorough, and thoroughness takes time. We encourage you to plan for a visit longer than a standard dental visit rather than trying to fit it between other commitments. If a second visit is needed for the treatment consultation portion, there is no extra cost, and we communicate that need upfront so you know exactly what to expect before you arrive.
What Patients Tell Us Surprised Them Most
Every practice says they’re different. Here’s what patients actually tell us when they leave:
They weren’t rushed. The appointment moved at their pace, their questions were welcomed rather than managed, and no one made them feel like the next patient was already waiting.
The doctors seemed to already know what they were going to ask. More than once, patients have described having their questions answered before they’d finished forming them, reflecting how thoroughly our team prepares and pays attention to each individual.
Seeing is different from being told. Our imaging and show-and-tell approach consistently changes how patients understand their own oral health. Being handed a printed report with annotated findings—something to take home, review, and share—lands differently than a verbal summary at the end of an exam.
The depth of the consultation. Frequently, we find that patients who’ve been to other practices are surprised by how comprehensive our exam is, not just in scope, but in how much genuine attention is paid to each element of it.
The feeling patients most consistently describe when they leave: cared for, not processed. That’s the River Oaks Dental Arts standard, and it’s what our team delivers every single day.
